Veterinary Internship Program:
Southern Equine accepts Intern Veterinarians from across the globe. An intern is a newly graduated doctor who has passed the veterinary boards. These doctors are practicing veterinarians. Internships are one year long and focused on developing clinical skills.
Goal of the Internship: To develop a well-rounded practitioner solid in the basics of equine veterinary medicine. The internship has excellent mentorship throughout the year from all of our veterinarians. We strive for our interns to be confident and ready to practice after the year is completed. To prepare and expose the intern for ambulatory, outpatient, and in-house cases as well as emergencies. The internship is designed to suit those most interested in general equine veterinary medicine with an emphasis on sports medicine, advanced diagnostic imaging, reproduction, and alternative medicine (chiropractic and acupuncture) although we have had interns successfully go on to internal medicine and theriogenology residencies and fellowships.
Veterinary Externship Program:
An extern is a student enrolled in a professional veterinary college, and will be completing their DVM degree in 1-4 years time. They are welcomed into our facilities with room and board provided. Externships are 2-4 weeks in length and are required in order to be eligible for our Intern positions.
Goal of the Externship: To get hands-on experience with mentorship and be exposed to a wide variety of cases. We involve our externs in cases and procedures as much as possible. We hope the extern leaves having learned and tried something new. Externs are exposed to both in-hospital and ambulatory appointments, emergencies, surgeries, and procedures. Externs will gain experience from each veterinarian at the practice.
